OAHU SPORTS PROGRAM REVIVED!
Despite well-intentioned efforts in the recent past, the Oahu Division Sports Program has been dormant and inactive for years…but no longer! Adult Corrections Officer (Sgt.) Kalani Werner has taken up the challenge to revive the program to provide Oahu Division members another opportunity to come together in fellowship, camaraderie, and of course, healthy competition.
“The Union is only as strong as all of us standing together. [The Sports Program] allows us to build relationships within our Union, and that gives us strength!” explained Werner.
Along with his co-workers from the Oahu Community Correctional Center (James Werner, Shannon Kalua, Trina Alauni, Maylee Tamapua, David Moku, and Robert Atinsanoe), Kalani planned a one-day Volleyball Tournament. However, by partnering with the Entertainment Committee (chaired by David Day), they were able to successfully provide members a fun-filled day of festivities that also included swimming at the pool, a pick-up game of kickball for the keiki (conducted by Chair Conrad Caravalho), and food and refreshments. A special shout out goes to ACO Alan Higa (Higa Meats) for their generous donation.
At the end of the day, bragging rights went to Team Automatic from OCCC!
“Even though Team Automatic went home with the championship and everyone went home sweaty and exhausted, members were eagerly asking about our next event,” says Werner.
