Aloha Family,
I want to take a moment to address the AFSCME Judicial Panel on September 16, 2024, regarding the accusations brought against me. I understand that this situation has caused concern among our union, and I want to be fully transparent with you, my fellow members.
Regarding charge #1, related to a former team member’s severance pay, I established that it was not a severance package. The individual continued working with the union through November 30, 2022, and I have documentation and testimony from our HR team to support this.
For charges #2-5, involving a flight to attend training that occurred in November 2022, employees made unauthorized charges using the union credit card for a family member’s travel on the trip. After discovering the unauthorized transactions, I immediately reimbursed the union for the expenses.
Since taking office, I have implemented numerous safeguards and protocols to ensure union dues are protected. It saddens me that someone I once worked closely with uses the word “transparency” to tarnish my reputation.
What matters most to me is the integrity and reputation of this union. That’s why I’ve worked tirelessly to establish systems that prevent any financial misconduct under my leadership. We’ve replaced the entire business office team, strengthened financial protocols, and prioritized transparency to restore and safeguard the reputation of UPW. These improvements have taken time, but we are stronger because of them.
You may have heard rumors, but this is the truth. As a member, I believe in the process and integrity of the hearing, which is why I haven’t spoken on this issue sooner. I look forward to AFSCME’s ruling and will uphold whatever decision is made. I encourage anyone seeking more information to contact the union without hesitation.
As I always do, I’d like to end my message with a personal story. When my dad passed, his last words of wisdom to me were: “Do right by the members and do right by their families, and you will always be in your position.”
I stand before you today, reaffirming my commitment to transparency and integrity in all we do. Together, we can build a stronger future for UPW based on trust, collaboration, and shared purpose.
Mahalo for your trust and support.
In Solidarity,
Kalani Werner
