Aloha Family,
On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we honor the great civil rights leader who dedicated his life to fighting for human rights. Dr. King stood for the fair treatment of all people and fought to protect workers on the job. Many of the issues he spoke for are the same issues our union continues to champion today.
In a speech to the AFL-CIO in the mid-1960s, Dr. King noted, “The labor movement was the principal force that transformed misery and despair into hope and progress.” Today, United Public Workers continues to facilitate that hope and progress by aspiring for fair wages, better benefits, and more protections for our members.
The fight will not end until all workers are respected and our families are protected. I hope you find inspiration in leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to stay informed and educated and to know your rights and your worth. In that inspiration, I hope you will stand in support and solidarity with your Brothers and Sisters as we confront injustice at work and in our community.
Stay safe and have a blessed holiday with your loved ones. United Public Workers offices statewide will be closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We will return to the office on Tuesday, ready to serve you.
In solidarity,
Kalani Werner
State Director
