United Public Workers is excited to announce our third-annual “Blue-Collar Christmas” event, taking place on December 7th at two wonderful locations: Keehi Lagoon, John A. Burns Hall on Oahu, and Wailoa State Park Large Pavilion on Hawaii Island. This heartwarming initiative aims to spread holiday cheer to children in need, making the festive season a little brighter for them and their families.

The holidays can be overwhelming, especially for over 80 children residing in Hawaii Island’s foster care system or those who have been victims of trauma and abuse. UPW is dedicated to lifting their spirits through this special event, held in partnership with local organizations that support keiki involved in programs through Catholic Charities Hawaii.

This year, we have chosen the islands of Oahu and Hawaii for our community outreach efforts, where our members live, work, and play. Our event specifically targets foster youth, therapeutic foster youth, and other children who may be experiencing similar hardships. Selected children and their families will enjoy a day filled with engaging activities, including arts and crafts stations, a fun photo booth, and exciting prize drawings. The event will culminate in a joyous surprise visit from Santa Claus, who will arrive with a bag full of presents!

Member volunteers have been busy shopping the children’s wish lists to fulfill their requests for gifts, including Lego Building Blocks, a Fuji Film Instant Camera, Bluetooth speakers, and a robotics kit. These purchases have been made possible thanks to the generous donations from UPW and community members across the state.

UPW State Director Kalani Werner shares that this cause is particularly close to his heart. “Thank you to Catholic Charities Hawaii and our UPW members for their generosity. The donations, the volunteers, and the overall outpouring of love from our communities help to make this event a success,” Werner expressed. “Together, we are healing the hearts and minds of children who have survived unthinkable experiences and those living through the uncertainty of a temporary placement in our foster care system.”

Join us as we come together to create a memorable holiday experience for those who need it the most. Your participation and support can make a world of difference for these children and families during the holiday season!
